The Bow Valley is a very popular location for people to visit, live and recreate. The area from the foothills and front ranges of Kananaskis to the Rockies in Banff National Park around Lake Louise contain world-class tourist attractions and adventures.

Wildlife and people concentrate movements along the valley bottoms, which can lead to human-wildlife incidents, displacement of wildlife from important habitat, and human-caused mortality.

Land managers in the Bow Valley have taken innovative approaches to improve human-wildlife coexistence through a variety of actions, including wildlife-proof garbage bins, reductions of human use in key wildlife corridors, highway wildlife crossings, and public education programs. But more needs to be done to protect wildlife in this special place.

The Human-Wildlife Coexistence Initiative was established with technical experts to develop ongoing programs, wildlife protection initiatives and education campaigns, supported by partners organizations. (Learn more about the Wildlife Coexistence Initiative and its report.)
